The summer season is one of four seasons that is much awaited by everyone. It is during this time that the holidays and vacations start. The children and their parents are bathed in the rays of the sun, even when seated within the four walls with a three-wing instrument rotating above their heads. The flow of air from this instrument, however, does not wipe out the rays nor protect them from the heat. Instead, the heat waves generate a flow of salted water that drops from their forehead.
It is during this time that the family ponders over the appliance that cools them down from the heat rays – the air conditioner. Serving a multitude of purposes, the AC not only relieved the dwellers of the house but also the employees seated at the office with a colored screen opposite their faces.
The market today has an abundance quantity of Air Conditioners displayed across various showrooms manufactured by twenty-plus manufacturing companies. Be it a split or a window air conditioner, the demand for these products is increasing across all segments of customers. The price does not halt the customers from purchasing the product as the market attracts them by providing them with various offers like; payment through EMIs, the festive season offers, and an extra warranty on the product.

Working of an Air Conditioner
An air conditioner typically works by replacing the hot air in a space with cooler air. This process involves:
- Evaporator
- Compressor
- Condenser
- Expansion Valve
- Refrigerant
The Evaporator collects the heat from within the room through a refrigerant. This refrigerant in its liquid state absorbs the collected heat and becomes gas. Now this gaseous substance is compressed through a compress which is located installed outside the house. The condenser, which is also situated outside the house, then takes this gaseous substance and converts it into a kind of liquid. The expansion valve, which is located between the condenser and the evaporator, keeps a tab on the number of refrigerants that move toward the evaporator.
Size of the Air Conditioner
For this, you must first and only cater to the wattage because that would take care of the rest. For smaller rooms, the wattage could be around 2.5 to 3 kilowatts but if the room is bigger, your wattage capacity needs to be as huge as 9 kilowatts. The wattage measurement generally is 0.15 kilowatts per square meter. Selecting the wattage efficiently would bring a lot of peace in the way the Air Conditioner works. If the wattage doesn’t justify your room, you wouldn’t be satisfied with the money you’ve spent.
How to measure the size of your room? Simply multiply the width along with the length. Be it a window-based Air Conditioner, or a split system, if your room has good insulation, a good 1 to 1.5 kilowatts per 10 sq meters of the area would do the trick for you. The insulation of the room and the temperature outside also play a major role along with the size of the room. The tonnage should only be determined to keep in mind the windows and doors in the room, the ceiling length, and the weather in which the room or the house is situated.
The size of the air conditioner also depends a lot on your budget. Simple and less powerful ones would cost way lesser than the ones with more power.
Type of Air Conditioners
To keep things better, there are many portable Air Conditioners with a window and a plug gracing the markets. Buy one of these, and have an Air Conditioner everywhere you go. But the real deals are the split-screen and Window Air Conditioners.
The calculation of the power consumption of any Air Conditioner is done by understanding the relationship between the power usage and the hours it has been used. For any home, an Air Conditioner working for 9 hours is taken as normal and that spends almost 3500 to 5000 watts. So, it depends on the consumption at that particular point, and especially hotter months would have more consumption than the cooler ones.
Window Box Air Conditioners
When the room is decently small or medium and you don’t need a very gripping system of cooling, you go for the Window Box Air Conditioners. Generally, people go for Window Air Conditioners because they are the most affordable out of the three types, the other two being Portable Air Conditioners and Split Screens. Some Window Box Air Conditioners require very strong wiring and connection to handle the power, so a good electrician must always be contacted for this purpose. But, the installation of these air conditioners is always very easy.
Split Systems Air Conditioners
To make matters cooler than cool, split systems Air Conditioners have graced the markets since long. The huge craze for split system Air Conditioners is for two things:
- The cooling and heating capacity of the Air Conditioners. It doesn’t just cool, it also heats up when you require the room to be all heated.
- Split System Air Conditioners look very good. It stays at the top of any wall in your room and does not need to be as tightly fixed as Window Air Conditioners.
The split Air Conditioners, though quite expensive, happen to have a lot more power than the other two types, namely Portable and Window Air Conditioners. The air purification system which contains the allergen filtration in some of the Air Conditioners is also commendable.
If you are buying a split-screen Air Conditioner means you have a larger room. Honestly, one split screen Air Conditioner with good tonnage could work for two rooms if there are good enough ventilation between the two rooms. Any type of Air Conditioners, be it split or window would always require an expert as an electrician because Air Conditioners installation is no joke.
Size of the Room
The room’s size is generally the one that decides on the size of the Air Conditioner. Generally, smaller rooms, preferably 20 square meters or lesser than that do not large Air Conditioners and Portable or Window Air Conditioners are the best for these rooms. For these rooms, an Air Conditioner about 2kilo watts to 4-kilo watts would do wonders.
Now, the rooms which we call medium-sized that is, rooms with sizes between 20 and 40 square meters have to have air conditioners that range from 4-kilo watts to 6-kilo watts.
For rooms larger than these, 9 kilo-watts is the minimum.
Coiling
The air conditioner typically uses two coils for the purpose of cooling:
- Evaporator Coils
- Condenser Coils
The evaporator and the condenser coils are a major part of the cooling process. Unlike a furnace, an air conditioner does not produce cool air, rather it makes sure the heat inside the room is taken outdoors and does not make the room suffocated and hot.
The evaporator coil is the place where the absorption of heat takes place, that is to say, the place where cold air rests. It is typically always located near the blower fan, and should always be kept clean just like the entire air conditioner. Any layer of the thinnest dust or dirt would impair the evaporator, hence disturbing its job. If the evaporator is, in any way disturbed, the condenser would always act faulty. That is the reason the evaporator and the condenser are always given more priority while cleaning the air conditioner.
Condenser Coils
The condenser is always outside the house and helps the evaporator release unwanted heat. Therefore, the airflow must be good and is very critical for your air conditioner. No dust or dirt should ever shape up in the condenser as it is always outside and fully exposed to the atmosphere, which is one of the major reasons for the formation of thick dust in and around it.
Before buying any kind of air conditioner, see to it that the evaporator and the condenser and well placed and work efficiently. These two need to work simultaneously otherwise, the Air Conditioner wouldn’t be fit to use.
Now, for the debate between the two leading coil metals, aluminum, and copper coils, the heat resistance is more in copper since it has a way higher coefficient in heat transfer. But, copper being a costlier metal is mostly avoided by manufacturers to avoid extra charges in the making and the ones that genuinely use copper are available at high prices in the market.
Since aluminum can bend easily, the question of pliability makes aluminum win over copper. When a little bit of aluminum could do wonders, three times more copper would have to be used to do the same. Hence, aluminum wins hands down here.
Thin copper coils are being used and made so that the air conditioners don’t miss out on the good qualities of copper. So, the suggestion would always be to go with air conditioners that have copper coiling but aluminum is no less and could be proved more efficient in small and medium-sized rooms.
Copper, though expensive stays for a longer time than aluminum, although nowadays both of these are used together.
Cooling Capacity
If we are to judge the cooling capacity of any Air Conditioner, the first three terms that come to mind are the Blue Fin, Microchannel Condenser Coils, and Gold Fin.
Blue Fin means coating any condenser or evaporator with a kind of resin called epoxy that contains the epoxide functional group. These are resistant, flexible, and also can resist any type of bad weather. The main advantage of epoxy is that it does not react to the salts and acids created in the atmosphere which helps the coating to remain for a good amount of time. The fins are always well protected by an epoxy coating which adds to the last of the said fins.
Gold Fin is a water-resistant coat that helps the coil from decay by forming a good hindrance between the atmosphere and the coil. The main difference between the two famous coats is the type of material used in the coating. Not much difference could be observed if one is used over the other.
Micro Channel Condenser Coil Technology, as the name suggests are tubes with various micro-channels for making it easier for the refrigerant to pass through. It reduces the risk of galvanic corrosion and also makes the entire system more portable and easier to install or use. Microchannel condenser coil technology is the modern method and makes Air Conditioners more efficient and resistant. It also helps in making the process of heating and cooling much more coordinated.
Between Bluefins and Gold fins, the latter helps in the defrosting process, thus making the AC more efficient with an improved outcome. Gold fin condensers do not rust that easily, keeping the entire system protected for longer. It is free of toxicity which adds no further negativity to the environment.
Compressor
A compressor in the air conditioner is used to reject and remove the excessive vapor and heat from the evaporator that is situated in the air conditioner. The main job of the compressor is to squeeze and compress the already existing vapor and make it smaller in volume while keeping the temperature relatively high.
There are five important types of Air Conditioner compressors:
- Reciprocating
- Rotary
- Screw
- Scroll
- Centrifugal
Out of these, the two most popular compressors are Reciprocating and Rotary. For Reciprocating, a piston is usually in charge of compressing the air inside a cylinder. The piston, as it moves down creates a vacuum that takes the refrigerant in. Reciprocating compressors show brilliant efficiency and can easily accommodate 7 cylinders.
For Rotary compressors, if you believe in quietude, this is the best for you. These compressors are tiny and work quietly using blades in a shaft. Through the process of the shaft rotating, the refrigerant is gradually pulled in and pushed out.
If a comparison comes between the two, there would be no clear choice but if the concern is noise, one should go for rotary compressors, and if the easy maintenance, the clear choice is reciprocating compressors.
Also, rotary condensers can take in more pressure so they are used for large-scale jobs with air conditioning.
Refrigerant Types
Refrigerant is a compound mostly found in the form of liquid or gas. It absorbs heat from the environment and provides refrigeration or air conditioning when it is combined with different components such as compressors and evaporators.
Without refrigeration, there would be no Air Conditioning.
Refrigerants in ACs absorb fluid and release heat. Other than this, Thermodynamic phenomena of phase change are the process that is also used by refrigerants. This helps the liquid to convert to gas and vice versa.
The refrigeration process starts in the evaporator component of the system. The refrigerant liquid will absorb heat and change to vapor under low pressure. Then, the vapor travels to the compressor component of the current system.
The compressor pressure and temperature increase. The release of heat from the vapor happens at this stage. It happens in the condenser component. And then, the refrigerant changes back to liquid form and it travels back to the evaporator. Repetition of the process happens again and again.
The classification of refrigerants into different groups is due to the chemical composition of it. The most common refrigerants include chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), and natural refrigerants.
Halocarbons are synthetically produced. The classification depends on the chemical elements chlorine (Cl), hydrogen (H), carbon, and Fluorine (F).
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s) – R11, R12, R113, R114, R115
Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) – R22, R123
Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) – R134a, R404a, R407C, R410a
CFCs – Chlorofluorocarbons
These refrigerants contain chlorine, fluorine, and carbon. R11, R12, R13, R14, and R15 are included in CFC refrigerants. This type can be used for commercial as well as daily purposes. Before late in the 30s it was non-toxic, non-flammable, and non-reactive.
But in the 70s, it proved hazardous for the layer of ozone and unfriendly to the environment. The chlorine atom splits the extra oxygen atoms in the ozone, so it is liable for ozone depletion.
In the late 80s, it was banned because of adverse environmental effects.
R11, R12, R13, R113, R114, R500, R502, and R503 are the top refrigerants of CFCs. Some of them produce greenhouse effects.
HCFCs – Hydrochlorofluorocarbons
HCFCs are generally referred to as the substitute for CFCs. It contains hydrogen, carbon, chlorine, and fluorine. It affects around 10% of the ozone layer.
HCFCs are non-toxic, cheap, and competent. Even if they do not harm the environment they are known as greenhouse gases. They deplete the ozone slowly but continuously.
R22, R123, R124, R401A, R401B, R402A, R403B, R408A, R409A, R414B, R416A falls under the group of HCFCs.
HFCs – Hydrofluorocarbons
They do not include any particles of chlorine. So, they are not harmful at all and do not deplete the ozone layer. They have a powerful impact on global warming.
After the ban on HCFCs, this group comes in. It includes carbon, hydrogen, and fluorine. So, compared to other refrigerants, it has a lower potential for global warming.
This group is always in demand because of its environmental stability. This group includes R23, R134a, R404A, R407C, R410A, R417A, R422A, R422B, R422D, R507, R508B.
Natural Refrigerants
They are completely natural and not created by men like the other ones. They are less costly compared to other refrigerants.
Examples of natural refrigerants are Air, CO2, HC, ammonia, H2O, etc. They have negligible effects on global warming and also have zero depletion of the ozone layer.
The most common refrigerants nowadays are:
R-134A (HFC)
It is also a halo alkaline refrigerant and has a Thermodynamic process. It uses a special oil blend of polyol ester or polythene and is a better choice for the environment.
R – 407C
This one has thermodynamic properties and is a replacement refrigerant to retrofit R-22 equipment. While it works in refrigeration systems with medium temperatures and is an alternative to freon, it is safe for the environment.
R – 404A
A safe alternative to R-22. It has a wide temperature range that makes it useful in the industrial and commercial transport industries.
R – 404A is available in many stores that sell cooling as well as heating products.
It does not react rapidly with air or water and is colorless, odorless, and inflammable. Direct contact can cause frostbite.
R – 410A
It is a blend of difluoromethane, two hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants, and also pentafluoroethane. It is a non-ozone depleting refrigerant.
Chlorine is not present and provides better energy efficiency than other refrigerant types like R-407C and R-22. Helps in providing better performance and high refrigeration capacity and pressure makes it more suitable than R-22.
Inverter Vs Non-Inverter Ac
Inverter Air Conditioner
An inverter is a device for converting frequency. This technology is used in many home appliances and controls the electric voltage, current, and frequency. Inverter AC varies their cooling or heating capacity by adjusting the power supply frequency of their frequency of compressors. It has accurate temperature control and as the same temperature is obtained, the unit adjusts its capacity to eliminate any temperature fluctuations.
Non-Inverter Air Conditioner
Non-Inverter ACs have a fixed cooling or heating capacity and can only control the indoor temperature by starting or stopping the compressors. It starts and stops repeatedly. They are cheaper and more accessible. More suitable for industrial applications, as well as cooling load fixed.
Inverter ACs are better than Non-Inverter ACs
The biggest difference between inverter and non-inverter AC is that the motor of the inverter compressor has more speed. Whereas, the speed of the non-inverter compressor is fixed. So, it operates at either full or minimum speed. While, in inverter AC the sensor adjusts the power according to the temperature of the room, saving energy and also lowering the electrical consumption.
The compressor of the AC does not work at its full capacity all the time due to the sophisticated operational method of the inverter. So, when the speed is lower, the energy will also become lower and you will have to pay less money for electricity.
The compressor motor of the inverter AC does not turn off and on all the time, it keeps working at a lower time, and the operation is quieter.
The technology of the inverters makes cooling and heating more efficient but it also makes the ACs life longer.
The inverter AC can cool or heat your room faster than the non-inverter AC. It is because, at the beginning of the process, the inverter uses more power and also diminishes the power when it gets close to the desired temperature. Inverter AC is expensive but a long-term investment with many benefits like the form of low maintenance cost, lesser power bills, and better performance while the non-inverter AC is comparatively cheaper and is also good enough to cool a room.
Star Ratings of Air Conditioners
EER
EER – Energy Efficiency Ratio is equal to the amount of heat removed by the AC per hour which is divided by the power consumed by the particular AC. AC with higher EER defines the higher efficiency in it. The accepted norm of this star rating is 27 degrees inside the room and 35-degree outside the room and the humidity is 50%.
Equation: BTU/hr/Watt
The ratio of EER is measured by BTU and Watt where BTU is for cooling capacity and Watt for power inputs.
EER costs more during the purchasing, and in the long run, it can save the money of the customer.
The portable AC has higher EER ratings and gives the same saving in homes and large business sectors.
BEE
BEE – Bureau of Energy Efficiency
An agency of the Government of India established under the Ministry of Power. It is an autonomous government agency that introduced the conservation and efficient use of energy in many electrical appliances in our country.
BEE Star Rating is the capacity of the appliance according to the volume, storage volume, and electricity it consumes per unit.
The main purpose of the BEE star rating is to educate and inform the customers about the energy efficiency of the product they are willing to buy.
The BEE Star Rating program updates every year. As technology improves and more and more energy-efficient appliances are introduced, the labels are trusted accordingly.
ISEER
ISEER – Indian Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio
It means that the total amount of heat can be removed by the AC from the indoor air with the total amount of energy it consumes when it is in the active mode of cooling.
A new method of star rating introduced in India known as ISEER.
The concept of ISEER is based on many terminologies based on BEE as per the different climate profile
i.) CSTL – Cooling Seasonal Total Load = It means the total amount of heat that can be removed by the AC from the indoor air when it is the inactive mode.
ii.) CSEC – Cooling Seasonal Energy Consumption = It means the total amount of energy consumed by the AC when it is in active mode for cooling operation.
So, the equation of ISEER is CSTL/CSEC.
Window AC And Drawbacks
Window AC is referred to as a room conditioner as well. It is the simplest form of the AC system and is fixed on windows or walls. A single unit is assembled in a casing where all the components are located.
Drawbacks
- Not all windows support AC. Fixed and casement windows do not accommodate window A/Cs.
- The overall efficiency of the AC process is usually less than other AC options. So, it is important to purchase a unit with Energy Star.
- Blockage of outside view after installation of the window AC.
- It usually requires exterior support. Stories of units falling out windows, even during installation, are very common.
- The installation panels that come in within come with a lot of hot air, which is exactly the opposite of what you want.
- Even the best installation may still leave your home or apartment with the security lock.
- As Air Conditioners cool, they also dehumidify indoor air, and that water also must go somewhere.
- The appearance of many window units in a living area may affect the decor.
- More of a hassle to remove and move to another room or location.
Conclusion
For a ‘desirable’ product, Air Conditioners have become a necessity due to the changing climatic conditions. Amidst never-ending work and tight deadlines, customers are looking out for a cool mind to work which the air conditioners can only provide. The air conditioner has created an identity of itself among households. It has created a niche for itself in the automobile industry. In the last two decades, electricity consumption has skyrocketed due to an increase in the demand for air conditioners in schools, hospitals, colleges, malls, theaters, and cars. The harmful emissions from the air conditioners have caused irreversible climatic conditions.
The best Air Conditioner is one that satisfies the need for a cooler temperature without putting too much stress on the customer’s finances or the environment. The consumer can decide on the AC of their choice by having a quick look at the features describing it best. Online markets offer EMI options making it convenient for the customer to select the Best air conditioner of their choice.
